we work with europe and the united states and we work on how europe and the united states can work together on the major world challenges like climate change and economic trade and development, just a number of issues the program i run goes back to the early days in the first 20 years when we were primarily a grantmaker making grants to low-cal practitioners and policymakers. i started this program about four years, five years ago now, i think, time flies, to really bring in members of our marshall memorial fellowship network of which david chiu is one of our alumni. some of our past grantees and also the next crop of practitioners and local civic leaders who are really looking to change their home communities by looking abroad or looking to other cities to see what other cities are doing well and how that might be imported back home or translated back home. so the comparative dom particular policy program works primarily in the 25 cities that doug mentioned, but not exclusively in those cities. we really are looking for some of the best practices in education and workforce development, in

here is a building in europe. this is a building in austria. this building was meant to celebrate the designation as the cultural capital of europe. these are some of the ideas we are exploring. within the building, at the transit center, commuters will have a clean, let, naturally ventilated spaces. at the platform level, they will also be clean and modern and will see a natural sunlight through the opening of the light colorado. in this way, the transit center will change your idea about what an urban traffic center will be like. sustainability has been an important component and has been one of our core missions for the project. in this cross section, we can see the energy techniques that were deployed. the building is on track for a gold leaf reading from the u.s. building council, a tremendous achievement for a transit building. the new station will consume 25% less energy required by the state due to its efficient lighting, ventilation, etc., and will draw most of its heat from one of the largest geothermal locations. here you see the lig

important thing is that amsterdam is one of the five major economic central's -- economic centers in europe, and we want to stay that way, and we are an attractive city for international business, like the american and asian companies that like to have business in amsterdam. it is a real nice place to stay. experts like to live in amsterdam, and is accessible from all parts of the world. it is also very important case of cycling. what irony said, 2.2 million and happens, but the last line may be the most important, about 120 kilometers per day traffic jams. that is qu7?) a lot. this distance is not more than 25k. we have a real problem. that is not good for business. for us, it is active transport, really important as a solution for being accessible. ok, does it work? yes. this is the city. at the red lines, these are the congestion. this is the pattern of workers who go to work in the morning and in the afternoon. most of the workers come from outside of the city of amsterdam. they come mostly by car, but also a big part from public transport. what was the conclusion of all the businesses?

this might be - you are going to plan a biking trip in europe you might want to think about going to germany, denmark tore netherlands rather than portugal or spain. those are the brackets on the chart. the british government and government in in netherlands keep a good job keeping up with biking in their countries the graph here just records all the bicycling activity starting in the 1950's today. and we saw the amount of biking in both countries decreases but injury risk goes up in the countries as the amount of bicycling increase and the motors increased until the 1970's and then they turned around. the two countries turned around. probably in 1970s the second oil embargo and sort of the whole green movement and more focus on biking. actually the netherlands took this to task and actually actively promoted bicycling and tried to get the culture back-up in the netherlands and they were able to do that. the graph shows as the amount of bicycling goes down the risk goes down as we saw in the intersections and cities and countries and then also this time series data shows us as the bi

this is a graph of projected global warming and temperature rise and its effects northwest europe and particularly the uk. it's a very similar picture to the one you have here. it predicts however you account for the uncertainty, a very significant rise in temperature over the next 50 to 100 years. as a result of that average temperature rise of at least 3 degrees centigrade is that we are going to see warmer, weter winters, drier, hotter summers, a sea level rise in excess of 800 millimeters, probably 850 millimeters, in the southeast of england. but hidden underneath that are perhaps more important messages. that temperature rise will lead to much stormier weather so when we get rainfall we're likely to see particularly and interestingly in the summer months much more intense rainfall in the future than we see today and on top of any sea level rise, as will mentioned, increase in storm surges which will exacerbate the sea level rise even more. what we're looking at is what does that mean if that occurs how will we adapt our urban areas to adeal with this? at the present time we have
